Features of the effect of high-protein isocaloric diet on anthropometric indices in patients with chronic diseases of the biliary system on the background of obesity

Abstract


Background. Traditional dietary advices for the treatment of chronic diseases of the biliary system in patients with obesity have a number of negative effects, including reduction in muscle mass that has a negative impact on the disease course. The purpose is to study the effect of a high-protein isocaloric diet on anthropometric data of patients with chronic diseases of the biliary system on the background of obesity. Materials and methods. 124 patients with chronic diseases of the biliary system on the background of obesity were examined. They were divided into the treatment group (n = 62) and control group (n = 62). The patients of the treatment and control groups had a diet with a moderate decrease in energy value (an isocaloric diet) by 300–400 kcal. The difference in diet of patients of the treatment group consisted in a significant increase in the protein quota (up to 1.6–1.8 g per 1 kg of body weight) due to low-fat meat, poultry and fish, a decrease of simple and complex carbohydrates (not more than 3 g per 1 kg of body weight) and lower reference fat (1.0–1.2 g per 1 kg of body weight) in the diet. Results. The anthropometric study revealed that weight loss in patients of the treatment group was mainly due to adipose tissue, which contributes to an increase in the muscle/fat coefficient from 0.98 ± 0.05 to 1.21 ± 0.07 (p < 0.05). Conclusions. A high-protein isocaloric diet has a positive effect on anthropometric data in patients with chronic diseases of the biliary system on the background of obesity.
